Great News!!! Formula One Legend Michael Schumacher 'Not In a Coma Anymore'!

Seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher is no longer in a coma and has left the Grenoble hospital where he was being treated, his family said on Monday.

The German suffered severe head injuries after a fall on a family skiing break shortly after Christmas last year.

Schumacher's life was in danger immediately after the crash, and he was left in a coma for several months as doctors continued to work on aiding his recovery.

Although there had been no official news about Schumacher's recovery for some time, a statement issued by his family and management on Monday revealed that progress had been made in recent weeks.

It confirmed that he was no longer in a coma and that he had been moved from the University Hospital in Grenoble where he had been since the accident.

The statement said: "Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. He is not in a coma anymore.

"His family would like to explicitly thank all his treating doctors, nurses and therapists in Grenoble as well as the first aiders at the place of the accident, who did an excellent job in those first months.

"The family also wishes to thank all the people who have sent Michael all the many good wishes to Michael. We are sure it helped him.

"For the future we ask for understanding that his further rehabilitation will take place away from the public eye."

The location of Schumacher's rehabilitation is being kept secret to respect his privacy, and it is not expected that there will be any further updates about his exact condition imminently.

Eight years after his first FIFA World Cup goal, Lionel Messi scored his second as Argentina beat Bosnia-Herzegovina, 2-1

It was a winning start for Argentina but their victory was not convincing even before a late Bosnia reply from Vedad Ibisevic. This was a scratchy, scrappy performance that raised far more questions than it answered against a disciplined and technically adept Bosnia side who were undone first by a moment of misfortune three minutes in to their first World Cup and then, as they tired in the second half, by a moment of brilliance from Lionel Messi.
As expected, Argentina switched to a 5-3-2 from the 4-3-3 they used for much of qualifying, with Gonzalo Higuaín being replaced by Hugo Campagnaro. Higuaín was not fully fit which, with Rodrigo Palacio out with a calf injury, perhaps in part explained why Alejandro Sabella had made the change. But it still seemed baffling, particularly given that Bosnia, having used a 4-4-2 through most of qualifying, had spent their warm-up games preparing to use the 4-2-3-1 they did ultimately deploy. Sabella was a devotee of 5-3-2 when he led Estudiantes to the title and the Copa Libertadores but the danger of using three central defenders against a lone centre-forward is that, with two spare men, one is left redundant. Sabella had only heightened the sense of mystery by saying his selection was not to do with how he expected Bosnia to line up but “more with other things, but I can’t say what publicly”, prompting rumours about cliques and splits in the squad.

The Next Nook Will Be a Samsung Galaxy Tab

Barnes & Noble finally found a home for its collapsing hardware business: Samsung.
The Korean hardware giant will build Nook software into Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 tablets and sell them in Barnes & Noble retailers as Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nooks.

The announcement comes roughly four months after Barnes & Noble CEO Mike Huseby promised new hardware by late this year. Now, in a partnership with Samsung, he seems to have delivered on his promise, while mostly exiting the hardware business.

The 7-inch Tab 4 will be a co-branded Android device, but will offer the Barnes & Noble's Nook reading experience.

The 7-inch Tab 4 will be a co-branded Android device, but will offer the Barnes & Noble's Nook reading experience. The Nook HD tablets were notable for a consumer-friendly interface that allowed users to configure profiles for each family member.

“Standing behind these great new devices will be the power of our 40,000 Barnes & Noble booksellers combined with our deep bookselling and retail expertise to provide sales support and personalized in-store customer service for our lineup of new Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook products," Huseby said.

The current Galaxy Tab 4 costs $199.99, runs Android 4.4 (KitKat), features two cameras (1.3 megapixel on the front and 3 megapixel on the back) and boasts a 1280 x 800 screen, which is actually a lower screen resolution than Barnes & Noble's last 7-inch Nook HD (1440 x 900). No word yet on whether or not the Tab 4 Nook's will also offer access to Google Play.

Barnes & Noble will continue to sell its own GlowLight e-readers alongside the Tab 4 Nooks starting this August, and confirmed to Mashable that it will build new e-readers as well. Late last year, Barnes & Noble delivered an ultralight, 6.2-oz. e-reader with e-ink, but did little to market it during the holiday buying season.

India surrenders No 1 ODI rank

Hamilton: India were today dethroned as the number one ODI team after they suffered an agonising 15-run defeat in a rain-truncated second cricket one-dayer against New Zealand, who have now taken a 2-0 lead in the five-match series here.

India, who desperately needed a win to retain their top spot, made a valiant effort to overhaul the revised target of 297 in 42 overs but failed to cross the finishing line scoring 277 for nine in 41.3 overs, giving Australia pole position in the ICC ODI rankings. The Duckworth-Lewis par score in 41.3 overs was 293.

Put into bat, the Kiwis rattled up 271 for seven riding on Kane Williamson's 76 and all-rounder Corey Anderson's rampaging 17-ball-44 that included five huge sixes as the hosts amassed a whopping 101 runs in 8.4 overs after rain interruption.

India were left with a daunting task of chasing a revised target of 297 as per the D/L method and were again done in by a shaky start and lack of big partnerships which has been their bane of late.

Virat Kohli, who hit a century in the first ODI, again top-scored with a sparkling 78 while skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (56), Suresh Raina (35), Ajinkya Rahane (36) got the starts but could not translate them into match-winning knocks.

Tim Southee (4/72) was pick of the New Zealand bowlers while Anderson again displayed his all-round prowess picking up three for 67 with wickets of Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Shikhar Dhawan (12, 22 balls) and Rohit Sharma (20, 34 balls) wasted a lot of deliveries upfront as India couldn't take advantage of the bowling Powerplay.

Sunanda died of poisoning, SDM asks police to probe murder, suicide angles

New Delhi: The Sub-Divisional Magistrate, probing the death of Sunanda Pushkar, on Tuesday directed the police to investigate the case thoroughly including the murder and suicide angles after he categorically pin-pointed 'poisoning' as the reason behind the sensational demise. Significantly, Alok Sharma, the SDM in his report, said no family member of Sunanda doubted any foul play in her death, the sources said.

Doctors at AIIMS who conducted autopsy on Sunanda had said her death was 'sudden and unnatural' and it was caused by 'drug overdose' which in other words could be called drug poisoning. 52-year-old Sunanda was found dead in a 5-star hotel in South Delhi on Friday night, a day after her twitter spat with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar over an alleged affair with Tharoor.

AIIMS sources said the autopsy report submitted to the SDM mentioned about over a dozen injury marks on both hands of Sunanda and a minor bruise on her left cheek which could be due to use of 'blunt force'. The report, however, ruled out death due to the injuries.

The autopsy report also said no food samples were found in Sunanda's stomach which according to doctors suggested that "she had not been eating".

Police sources said two strips of anti-depressant drug alprazolam, commonly known as alprax, were found in the hotel suite where she was found dead.

Anirudh in trouble over Youtube teaser

Chennai: A city-based advocate approached the police commissioner’s office on Monday to file a complaint against young music composer Anirudh Ravichander of Why this kolaveri fame, contending that the musician’s new audio single, the teaser of which was recently released on YouTube, contains derogatory marks against women.

The song titled, Aint nobody ****in with my music, released on the video-sharing website on January 16 and extensively publicised by him in social media websites, contains obscene and immoral lyrics and degrades women in particular, stated S. Jebadas Pandian in his complaint. In his complaint, the advocate sought police action against Anirudh, citing that the song amounts to a crime under the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.

Anirudh, who achieved celebrity status and fame at a young age, had chosen to abuse the same and corrupt youth by exposing them to perverse lyrics and provoking them, the complaint read.

The lawyer also alleged that the music video had been released without obtaining censor certification under the Indian Cinematograph Act. All releases, including teasers and trailers are subject to censor certification, the advocate said. The video has now been taken down from websites by the uploaders.

Ajith, Vijay, Mahesh Babu set for BO battle

After almost seven years Vijay and Ajith are all set to battle it out at the box-office on Jan 10. Their films ‘Jilla’ and ‘Veeram’, both of which have garnered quite a lot of expectations, are slated to release ahead of the Pongal festival.

Distributors believe the festive season is an appropriate time to release big budget films with big stars as Tamil Nadu enjoys an extended holiday of 10 days. Although makers are hoping to rake in the moolah, trade pundits think otherwise. With simultaneous releases, a major problem that arises is availability of theatres. Adding to their woes is Mahesh Babu’s film ‘1 Nenokkadine’, which will also see a world-wide release on Jan 10.

Sources say ‘1 Nenokkadine’ has already blocked multiplex screens in the UK, US and Singapore where Tamil movies usually enjoy a good run.

With three films fighting head-on, ‘1 Nenokkadine’ seems to be a few steps ahead of the two Tamil films with aggressive promotions and theatre blocking.

However fans of Thala and Thalapathy seem to be unfazed and are ready to celebrate their matinee idols’ releases.

Surprisingly, the fans of the two stars, who are usually at loggerheads with each other, seem to have joined hands this time. According to TOI, Ajith fan clubs across the city are planning a special mention about Vijay's ‘Jilla’ in their banners, while Ilayathalapathy's fan club members are likely to wish ‘Veeram’ in their promotional banners.

The duo’s films have previously clashed at the box office and here’s what happened:

Bhagavathi and Villain:

Bhagavathi and Villain released on November 4, 2002. Both the films turned out to be blockbusters, giving Vijay and Ajith’s then floundering career a big boost.

Thirumalai and Anjaneya:

Both these films released on Oct 24, 2003. Though Thirumalai did well and transformed Vijay into a mass hero, Ajith’s Anjaneya only did average business.

Aadhi and Paramasivam:

Aadhi and Paramasivam which had similar plots, released on Jan 14, 2006, while Vijay’s Aadhi turned out to be a dud, Ajith’s Paramasivam fared averagely.

Pokkiri and Alwar:

Pokiri and Alwar both released on Jan 12, 2007. Pokkiri which was Prabhu Deva’s directorial debut in Tamil became a blockbuster hit, while Ajith’s Alwar tanked without a trace.

The question now is who will win the epic clash this time? Ajith, who is on a winning streak or Vijay, who needs a hit to get his career back on track, or will Mahesh walk home with the honours?

Teenagers who drink have more friends

Middle and high school students who drink alcohol are often the same ones winning the popularity contests, new research suggests.

Previous studies have found friend groups can influence choices about alcohol, but haven't looked at the possible social payoffs of drinking.

"There has not been much data to support that drinking among teenagers directly leads to higher popularity and more friendships," said Peter Delany. He is the director of the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality in Rockville, Maryland.

Delany was not part of the study team, which was led by Mir M. Ali, also from SAMHSA.

"The fact remains that underage drinking is linked to a long list of adverse health and behavioral consequences, including the deaths of thousands of adolescents and young adults each year," Delany told Reuters Health in an email.

Ali and colleagues analyzed data from a national study of 7th through 12th graders from 132 schools who were surveyed in 1994. The survey included a variety of questions on drinking and substance use, number of friends, friends of friends, home life and other factors.

Teens who reported occasional drinking and getting drunk tended to have higher "social connectedness" than their abstaining peers. That was especially true for white students.

Getting drunk seemed to be more important for popularity than just drinking in general. Kids who drank at all reported having an extra half a friend, on average, and those who got drunk reported one additional friend compared to non-drinkers.

The findings "provide new evidence on the motivation behind adolescent drinking," the researchers wrote in the journal Addictive Behaviors.

"There are many healthy behaviors, both athletic and academic, that increase teens' popularity among peers," Delany said.

For instance, two of the study's authors found in an earlier paper, published in the Journal of Public Health, that playing sports leads to more friends for overweight white boys.

Family, peers, schools and neighborhoods can all influence teen drinking and may also indirectly influence how much popularity teens gain by drinking, Delany said.

"We know that parental influence can help adolescents resist drinking and other forms of substance use," he said. "Recent SAMHSA reports have shown that adolescents are very influenced by their parents' attitudes on substance use."

Teens need adult help to develop a healthy relationship with alcohol and to have positive social values, Joseph P. Allen said.

Allen studies adolescent social development at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. He was not part of the new research.

"Adults often avoid teens like the plague, but then we're surprised when, left to their own devices, they develop values with which we're not comfortable," Allen said. "If we don't engage with teens - by getting them involved in volunteer service, encouraging their participation in civic activities and debates and just talking to them - then we can't be too surprised when their values are largely those that appear in the online and popular media."

The link between drinking and having friends is not only an issue for the underage, researchers noted.

"One of the toughest problems with teen alcohol use is that alcohol use is associated with greater social involvement, and likely popularity, even in adulthood," Allen said.

"Teens are often just trying to do what they see adults doing, and it's hard to convince them it's a terrible thing when they see both social and work-life events where alcohol plays a prominent role," he said.

"Our best chance is likely to give teens ways to feel like they are moving into the adult world that don't revolve just around alcohol," he said.

Parents can consult resources like SAMHSA's "Navigating the Teen Years: A Parent's Handbook for Raising Healthy Teens," Delany said. The handbook is available here: 1.usa.gov/JHyeEC.

Facebook acquires India's Little Eye Labs

New Delhi: Social networking giant Facebook today acquired Bangalore-based Little Eye Labs, its first take over in the country, for an undisclosed amount. The start up firm builds performance analysis and monitoring tools for mobile app developers.

"Today, we are very excited to announce that Facebook is acquiring our company. With this acquisition, Little Eye Labs will join forces with Facebook to take its mobile development to the next level," Little Eye Labs said on its website.

This is Facebook's first acquisition of an Indian company and Little Eye is happy to become part of such an incredible team, it added.

Though the deal size has not been announced, reports suggest it could be in the range of USD 10-15 million.

"I'm excited to announce that we're acquiring Little Eye Labs, a company that produces world-class technology to help developers build more efficient products with Android.

This is an opportunity to welcome some of the industry's most talented engineers to our team in Menlo Park, California," Facebook Engineering Manager Subbu Subramanian said.

At Facebook, the focus continues to be on producing useful and engaging mobile apps, he added. "Little Eye Labs technology will help us continue to improve Facebook's Android codebase to make more efficient, higher-performing apps," he said.

Founded about a year ago by four Bangalore-based technology professionals -- Giridhar Murthy, Kumar Rangarajan, Satyam Kandula and Lakshman Kakkirala, Little Eye is backed by GSF and VenturEast Tenet Fund.

"The entire Little Eye Labs team will move to Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, California. From there, we'll be able to leverage Facebook's infrastructure and help improve performance of their apps," the note said.

It added that current customers of the firm will receive further information on its plans to offer a free version of Little Eye until June 30, 2014.

Some other acquisitions that Facebook has made to strengthen its mobile products include Parse, a mobile- backend-as-a-service startup (April 2013).

Facebook also recently made an attempt to buy instant messaging firm Snapchat, which reportedly turned down its USD 3 billion offer.

$866,902 for TN scientist to study brain

Chennai: Twenty years ago he worked on creating a telephone for hearing impaired children in Chennai while still a student at the Anna University. Now a full fledged professor , Khaleel A. Razak remains as innovative as ever and has even been awarded a five-year, $ 866,902 faculty early career development programme (CAREER) grant by the US National Science Foundation to carry on with his research into how the brain processes everyday sounds.

His aim? To find therapies for age-related hearing problems and the Fragile X Syndrome. “Age-related hearing loss is the most preventable hearing-related problem in the world,” explains the neuroscientist, who is an assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of California, Riverside.

His research that involves study of mouse models of aging and the Fragile X Syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder, is aided by an in depth examination of the pallid bat.

“The pallid bat is a bit unusual among bats in that it uses echolocation for general orientation and obstacle avoidance, but listens for prey on the ground, like crickets, scorpions and millipedes,” Prof. Razak explains.
“We hope to identify neuron types that seem to be lost or changed during ageing. There may be combinations of behavioural or pharmacological therapies that could delay or prevent these changes.” The grant will support research on how the brain’s auditory cortex processes information about sound locations.

“Precise sound localisation can be a matter of life and death,” he explained. “The auditory cortex is necessary for sound localisation, but our understanding of the relevant neural processing is rudimentary.
