Watch Earth spin from comfort of your home

Washington: Two Russian astronauts, who took a record-breaking seven and a half hour spacewalk outside the ISS, were unsuccessful at installing cameras that would allow people to watch the Earth spin from the comfort of their house.

The spacewalk by Oleg Kotov and Sergei Ryazansky was the third in a week at the orbiting laboratory. US astronauts Rick Mastracchio and Michael Hopkins had two spacewalks on Saturday and Tuesday to remove and replace a faulty cooling pump, Fox News reported.

The Russians' task was shelved after a Russian flight control team outside Moscow was not able to receive telemetry data from the video cam.

Vancouver-based UrtheCast launched the cameras with the Russian's aid into orbit on November 25.

Once calibrated, the cameras are going to start beaming images, and an ordinary web surfer would be able to see the Earth in space with a delay of only 45 minutes to a couple hours at the most.

Gauhar Khan wins Bigg Boss 7

Mumbai: Model-turned-actress Gauhar Khan won the seventh season of reality show 'Bigg Boss' tonight, pipping co-contestant Tanishaa Mukherjee. Gauhar, who won Rs 50 lakh in cash and a trophy, stayed in the house for 104 days.

"I Thank family for support. I am big fan of the show. I did not expect to come so far... till the finale," said Gauhar, who had won critical acclaim for her role in the film 'Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year' (2009). During her stint on the show, Gauhar's romance with fellow contestant Kushal Tandon caught everyone's attention and the two openly declared their love for each other. "They are strong personalities, if they know each other better... They could have been better friends," Gauhar's sister Nigar Khan said.

As I couldn't contact her, seeing the show was the only medium. Whenever she cried on the show, I also cried," said the yesteryears' actress.

Besides Gauhar, other contestants left in the house for the finale were Tanishaa, Sangram Singh and Ajaz Khan. Sangram came out of the house first and was followed by Ajaz, leaving Gauhar and Tanishaa for the final reckoning.

While Pratyusha Banerjee and Kamya Punjabi danced to the beats of 'Dabangg 2's' 'Fevicol Se' with Salman Khan on the occasion, Elli Avram, one of the most-liked contestants on the show, danced to oldies like 'Yeh Mera Deewanapan Hai' and 'Hawa Hawai'. Nothing is impossible, says Kejriwal

Ghaziabad: Set to be sworn-in as Delhi Chief Minister on Saturday, Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday said he does not have a magic wand to solve all the problems but nothing is impossible if honest people join hands.

45-year-old Kejriwal, who will be administered oath of office along with six AAP MLAs, at the historic Ramlila Maidan here said there will be no VIPs at the ceremony and 'everyone is invited'.

"It is open for all. No VIP is there. All 'aam admi' will be present. You are all invited," he told reporters.

Portfolios of the new ministers will be announced in the next two days, he said. The cabinet ministers who will take oath along with Kejriwal are Manish Sisodia, Rakhi Birla, Somnath Bharti, Saurabh Bhardwaj, Girish Soni and Satendra Jain.

The Chief Minister-designate asked honest officials and employees of Delhi government to contact him through SMS or email so that they can be deployed at places where they can work to solve Delhi's problems.

"I would request them to contact me through SMS or email, we will depute good people at good places and want to move ahead with them. I don't have a magic wand to solve all the problems, but if good, honest and efficient people join us nothing is impossible," he said.

"For the first time, there is a Chief Minister who is looking for honest officials to work for him, otherwise whenever a new CM comes, he or she looks for those officials who can earn them commission through corruption," he said. If honest officials join us, it can help us giving a corruption-free government, he said.

Asked how AAP would verify if somebody is honesty, he said, "We have a network and we will find out. A team of officials like present education secretary Rajendra Kumar are looking for honest and dynamic officials".

Kejriwal reiterated that as soon as he assumes power he would ensure 700 litres of water supply to each household and said all the necessary groundwork is being done. While calling upon people to come in large numbers at Ramlila ground for the swearing-in ceremony, Kejriwal said he will speak to his guru Anna Hazare and ask him to grace the occasion.

"Anna Hazare is my guru and I would personally talk to him on phone to invite him for the ceremony," he said.

"The invitation would be sent from the government's side and I had asked them to send an invitation to Hazare, Kiran Bedi and Justice Santosh Hegde," Kejriwal said.

In Ralegan Siddhi, Hazare said he would not be able to attend the ceremony on health grounds.

Speaking about the problems facing people, Kejriwal said he will take the help of a team of experts from IIT or IIM as and when required as 'we can't fix everything ourselves'.

Questioned if he would consult Congress which is extending outside support to AAP, on appointment of speaker, he said, "Why will we consult them".

Asked about problems of homeless and destitute who are forced to sleep in the open in the chilling winter night, he said it was an important task which can't be fulfilled without the help of 1.7 crore population of Delhi.

"There are still one lakh people who are fighting cold these days.We will soon install camps for them in different parts of Delhi," he said.

Earlier, Kejriwal held Janta Darbar to listen to the people's grievances and their suggestions. People from as far as Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Kerala, Bihar and Rajasthan had come to meet him.

People from various parts of Delhi including some government employees also met him and demanded an end to the contractual system in the Delhi government. Some also asked him to take into account the pollution in Yamuna river and work on it on priority basis.

Christmas is deadliest day of the year

A new survey suggests that more people die on Christmas than any other day of the year.

According to Medical Daily, in the 1970s, researchers discovered this phenomenon after they began studying death trends throughout the year.

A wide array of causes seem to contribute to the trend of Christmas Day deaths including understaffed hospitals and an unwillingness by people to bother their relatives for a ride to the doctor's office.

Death by cardiac disease, respiratory diseases, endocrine/nutritional/metabolic problems, digestive diseases, and cancer - the five most common causes of death - see an overall increase during this time of year, Medical Daily reported.

One study from the University of California San Diego examined hospital workforces around the holidays and discovered that Level 1 trauma centers often carry less than a full staff, and have less experienced professionals on hand during the Christmas holiday.

Kohli jumps to career-best rankings

Dubai: Star Indian batsman Virat Kohli jumped nine places to achieve his career-best 11th spot in the latest Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen issued today.

Kohli, who stroked 119 and 96 in the two innings in the first Test against South Africa, was the second highest-ranked Indian after Cheteshwar Pujara, another centurion in the same match in Johannesburg, who remained on seventh spot after earning 37 rating points.

South African A B de Villiers, one of the two South African centurions to help draw the Johannesburg Test, leads the rankings. He leads compatriot and second-ranked Hashim Amla by 25 ratings points.

Meanwhile, South Africa fast bowler Vernon Philander has achieved the coveted number-one ranking on the Reliance ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers after a stellar performance against India in the drawn Johannesburg Test.

Philander has dislodged team-mate Dale Steyn, who had been at the top of table since July 2009 when he went past Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan. Overall, Steyn spent 186 matches at the number-one position, the second-most ever after Muralitharan.

Philander had entered the Test trailing Steyn by four ratings points. While Philander recorded figures of four for 61 and three for 68, Steyn managed just one wicket. The contrasting performances resulted in Philander gaining 13 ratings points and Steyn conceding 13 ratings points.

This swing means Philander now leads Steyn by 22 ratings points and the 28-year-old from Bellville will now start the Durban Test as the number-one ranked bowler in the world for the first time in his career.

Philander is now the seventh South Africa bowler to claim the number-one rank after Aubrey Faulkner (1914-1921), Hugh Tayfield (1955-1958), Peter Pollock (1969), Allan Donald (1998-1999), Shaun Pollock (1999-2003) and Steyn (2008-2013).

Overall Philander is the 74th bowler to head the Test bowling ranking. Philander has also become the third South Africa bowler after Pollock and Steyn to break the barrier of 900 ratings points, considered a landmark for top bowlers. Philander's total of 912 ratings points is the joint-sixth best ever, with England's Tony Lock and West Indies paceman Curtly Ambrose, and the best-ever by a South Africa bowler.

In the team rankings, New Zealand's eight-wicket win over West Indies in the Hamilton Test has helped it register a 2-0 series win and, thereby, gain seven ratings points to retain seventh position with 82 ratings points. West Indies, on the other hand, has dropped behind Sri Lanka in seventh position in the table headed by South Africa (131 rating points). India are at second place with 119 rating points.

England off-spinner Graeme Swann, who retired from international cricket yesterday, ended his Test career in 15th spot. Swann's highest ranking with the ball was when he achieved the number-two position in March 2010. He reached a peak of 858 points later that year.

Swann also spent 41 matches and 111 days in 2011 as the top ranked ODI bowler, first reaching top spot on 3 July 2011. He has ended his ODI career in 24th rank on the bowling table. He also spent 35 matches and 338 days as the top ranked T20I bowler, first reaching top spot on 30 December 2010. Swann has ended his T20 International career in 17th position.

AAP to form govt on Thursday

New Delhi: Belying all claims of being a 'non-actor or no factor' in the Assembly elections by the Congress and BJP, Aam Aadmi Party founder Arvind Kejriwal on Monday gave a formal 'yes’ to form a government in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. He will be meeting Leutenant-Governor Najeeb Jung about staking claim to government formation.

Sources said that Kejriwal will take over as Chief Minister on December 26. Sources close to Kejriwal said the AAP intends to hold its oath-taking ceremony either at Jantar Mantar or the Ramlila Grounds, from where it had launched its anti-corruption crusade two years ago.

Speaking to reporters, AAP leader Manish Sisodia said: "If the Lt Governor permits, oath-taking will take place at Jantar Mantar."

Reacting to the AAP decision, Sheila Dikshit said that Congress will outside support to the government and it will be an issue-based backing. "We have not promised unconditional support to AAP. It is for their programmes, let us see if they deliver," she added.

"Aam Aadmi Party has compromised with a party that is known for corruption," said BJP leader Harsh Vardhan referring to the Congress. AAP has betrayed the people of Delhi, he added.

The AAP office in Ghaziabad was swarmed by supporters ahead of a crucial meeting that began at 10 am.

The engineer-turned-bureaucrat, who was largely instrumental in ending the 15-year rule of caretaker CM Sheila Dikshit, had declared he would take a call on government formation only after getting the feedback from citizens through 'jan sabhas' (public meetings), SMSes, phone calls, Facebook and his party’s website.

Aishwarya is a super mom: Abhishek Bachchan

Mumbai, Dec 22: Abhishek Bachchan said his actress wife Aishwarya Rai is a "super mom" and expressed his desire to protect his daughter Aaradhya from the world of showbiz so as to offer her normal childhood.

"Her (Aishwarya's) professionalism and dedication is unquestionable. As a mother (of Aaradhya) she is superb..she is a super mom. As a co-star, I have always loved working with her. It is a pleasure," Abhishek told PTI.

Abhishek said he and Aishwarya wanted their daughter Aaradhya be guarded from the showbiz.

"As her parents, Aishwarya and I want our child to be happy and healthy. I was guarded from all this (media attention and showbiz world). The trade magazine and all was banned in my house. The first time I read a film magazine was when I was 18," the actor said.

Abhishek appealed to media to show restrain in photographing star kids.

"This is one department (of children) where I would want the media to show restrain and responsibility. In our time social media was not there. I appeal to the media to show restrain..Don't do this to them..let children grow up the way they want to. We want to let her (Aaradhya) grow as a normal kid," the actor said.

Praising his wife for her professionalism and dedication to work, Abhishek said, "Aishwarya always knew what is the right film for her and has a knack to pick a right film that suits her. I love her as an actor. I am a big fan of her and she should be given the liberty to choose the films she wants to do".

The buzz is that the real life couple will be seen in adman Prahlad Kakkar's film, probably next year.

"What happens in selection process is (that) you have certain ideas and suggestions and things get worked out, so it is time consuming. It takes time to develop a script to making a film...It doesn't happen overnight," Abhishek said.

Abhishek said Kakkar had met them with a script. "He has a script which he is keen on. We haven't heard it completely yet. If we like it then we will do it," the actor informed.

Virat Kohli reminded me of Sachin Tendulkar of 1996 tour: Allan Donald

Johannesburg: Former South African pace legend and current bowling coach Allan Donald today compared Virat Kohli's century with Sachin Tendulkar, who had similarly counter-attacked the Proteas attack during a Test match in Cape Town back in 1996.

"The one word that comes to my mind is responsibility," he said, talking about the India's new No 4.

"He (Kohli) showed great discipline and responsibility. It reminded me of Sachin Tendulkar when they came here in 1996. I was the first one to say back in 1996 that India didn't have much bottle. One person jumped out and played for the situation, played for his team, and that was Tendulkar. That's what came to my mind when I saw Kohli batting," Donald told mediapersons here today.

Donald explained that Kohli's ability to punish the loose balls when required.

"The way Kohli left the ball and when we were slightly off the line he punished the ball. He paced his innings very, very well. He put up his hand today and showed real fight and he was tight and didn't give much away until the end."

The coach did say that he wasn't very happy with performance of his bowlers although he claims that South Africa is very much in control.

"At the same time, we were slightly wide and short, probably the widest I have seen outside the off-stump, because the ball was swinging. But the game never really drifted away from us. They are five down, and I will take it," he added.

Donald did agree that Indian batsmen showed a lot of patience early in their innings.

"It's a mixture of things, having India in trouble early on. Then, it became sloppy in patches as the day went on. India showed a lot of patience, and left the ball really well today. They also played Imran Tahir very well.

"They have learnt from past matches here, and also we needed to find the right areas with the ball. We could have done it better and it was a tough Test match cricket today," he said.

Kohli had earlier outlined that India will be looking to get 400 runs on the board, and if not they will be really pleased with 350-360 as well. Either way, if that happens, it will put a lot of pressure on the hosts, who have to bat last on this pitch.

"I thought we stuck to our guns really well, and tomorrow we have to come and make a big play. We need to keep our eyes on the pitch, there are a few cracks. The second new ball has come at the right time, and tomorrow we have to come swinging, and there’s no doubt about it," Donald signed off.

Bigg Boss 7: Is Kushal Tandon really coming back to the house?

Kushal Tandon, who was eliminated from Bigg Boss during the last week of October for his alleged violent behaviour against inmate Andy, was reportedly set to re-enter the Bigg Boss 7 house last night.

While all the rumours suggested the comeback, the actor was a no-show.

Kushal, a mass favourite was considered to be the liveliest young member in the house. His elimination has seemingly left the house quite boring and empty, it appears. Kushal’s re-entry to the house is expected to bring back those energies back again.

Still, we suspect a dramatic entry any time now. And how do we know that he’s on his way back to the show? Don’t trust us? No problem, following are telling signs of what is to become of Kushal Tandon’s re-entry into the Bigg Boss 7 house.

Gauhar humming 'Mera Kuchh Samaan Tumhare Pass Pada Hai' on the show, which was hinted at Kushal. Kushal’s recent tweets will make you think "will, Kushal be back in the show"?

Kushal Tandon @KushalT2803 17 Nov: ‘Just fin a channel meeting... vl keep u guys posted if i'm entering the BB house again.’

Kushal Tandon @KushalT2803 17 Nov: ‘Salman Bhai is not opposing my entry... all are rumors...love KT’

Bigg Boss 7’s live feed had Gauhar comment ‘Kushal mere liye shopping karke aaya hai', and in response Sofia says, 'Nice, aisa ladka chahiye' in a muted voice.

Kamya walks in a while later and asks 'Prathyusha mili?' and that was muted too. We can’t help but wonder if he’s just playing hide and seek with us?

Tune in for more updates from the animated Bigg Boss 7 house!

'Ram-Leela' Review: The good, the bard and the beautiful

Cast: Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone, Supriya Pathak Kapoor
Direction: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Rating: Three and a half stars

No apologies tendered: it’s lust at first sight. At a Holi celebration, their eyes meet, clouds of colour powder explode, and she grabs him for a hard kiss on the lips. The passion is on. And the woman is no coy cutie. She demands and receives an equal relationship.

Undoubtedly, co-writer and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is a man of thought and vision. Vibgyor hues, frescoed walls, antique drapes and glowling lamps light up every frame of 'Ram-Leela' (retitled 'Goliyon ki Rasleela: Ram-Leela' following imponderable objections). Indeed, here’s an exceptional visual banquet for the eyes, stylistically consistent, owing far more inspiration to Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet (1996) than to Shakespeare’s timeless love story.

Like Luhrmann’s take, Bhansali sets up a tableau of feuding families, updated to contemporary twitter-savvy times. And both the clans are steeped in crime ranging from trafficking in guns and hired killings to booze smuggling. In consonance with the theme, the editing pattern is swift, lurching, swinging from one event to another with the speed of a bullet train, punctuated by sumptuous dance set pieces. Indeed, for the first hour or so of this 155-minuter, you’re clean bowled.

Welcome back, Bhansali’s in stylish form, evidenced in his best works 'Khamoshi: The Musical', 'Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam' and 'Black'. There is a strong hangover, too, of the more accomplished sections of 'Devdas', particularly in the shaded gardens, balconies, palms and fronds, not to forget the reprise of a funeral cortege, the mourners uniformly garbed in white, all very visually striking.

Here comes the rub, though. Alas, the screenplay cannot sustain itself in terms of story content. Excessive repetition, endless showdowns between the clans’ bozos who seem to be migrants from 'Gangs of Wasseypur', a cheesy shake-your-booty dance item by Priyanka Chopra, and more fatally, lengthy meanderings from the romance to detailed sub-plots about the clans’ bloodthirsty agendas, take a toll on the love story.

How you wish the focus had stayed on Ram (Ranveer Singh) and Leela (Deepika Padukone), instead of blurring them into bipolar lovers-turned-vendetta-seekers, flanked by creepoids who’re too bad to be true. For instance, a guffawing gang continues to watch porn flicks, a corrupt cop goes gaga on being gifted those XXX-DVDs (come on, they’re a rupee a dozen), the fearsome Lady Don (Supriya Pathak Kapoor) even breaks into a tandav a la Kirron Kher in 'Devdas', and woe-ho-ho, out pops a senior politician (Raza Murad, in gigantic close-ups) canvassing support at the upcoming general elections. Is that a topical comment or just a bid to pepper in some politics? Go figure.

Bullets rent the air, the body count multiplying faster than it does in those Sylvester Stallone’s Rambo flicks. Alarmingly, violence takes over Bhansali’s designer show of unbridled passion. Moreover, dispensable vulgarity creeps in, with a near-rape scene and double entendres. “What’s your size?” quizzes Leela of Ram, eroding the intensity of their reunion. Ear, ear!

Yet these reservations amount to a molehill in a mountain of a movie: aesthetically mounted, faithful to the ethnic delights of its Gujarat backdrop (note a top shot of fiery red mirchis laid out to dry in the sun), conviction in the conventions of mainstream entertainment, and most of all, in drumming up palpable chemistry between the roguish Ram and the elegant, cocooned Leela. Opposites attract and how, during their encounters by moonlight, their elopement to a seedy lodge, only to be separated by the force of destiny. It happens.

Perhaps, the pair’s flight to the lodge and their argument over whether to marry formally or not, is the film’s most delicately treated sequence. Quite audaciously, Bhansali leaves their decision ambiguous. Consequently, no easy solutions are offered to subvert their mutual physical attraction. Clearly, whenever the twosome share screen-time, you’re engrossed, hoping that somehow or the other that they can walk towards a happy ending.

Suffice it to say, then, this Romeo and Juliet’s end could be comforting or disturbing, leaving you guessing right till the end. Script and dialogue-wise, co-writers Garima and Siddharth do an excellent job of blending in Gujarati patois. Vis-à-vis the plotting, the screenplay could have been tighter, besides avoiding guttersnipe lingo. Unquestionably superb technical support comes from Ravi Varman’s cinematography – the most dazzling in years – as well as the inticate sound design by Parikshit Lalvani and Kunal Mehta. Throughout, the costumes by Anju Modi and Maxima Basu, are a class apart. And the production design by Wasiq Khan is extraordinary.

On the downside, the songs composed by Bhansali fit the bill, but that’s it. They’re far too resonant of 'Devdas'. So, can the director continue to multi-task as a music director? Yes, but only if he evolves a distinctive stamp of his own. That he’s a master image-maker remains unchallenged, and also his gift for inveigling first-rate performances comes to the fore again.

Of the supporting ensemble, Supriya Pathak Kapoor is impressive, lording it over with her sharp tongue, effortlessly. In a brief but significant part, Richa Chadda, as a widow caught in the clans’ crossfire, exudes confidence and verve.

Over to Ranveer Singh. Usually over-the-top, he’s kept under control, displays muscle power to match up with the Khans, and isn’t bad at all during the dramatic moments. However, it’s Deepika Padukone whom the film belongs to. Looking drop dead gorgeous and going at her part with a wallop, she’s the prime asset of 'Ram-Leela'. Eminently worth a dekko.

Nazriya Nazim complains to Commissioner of Police

Chennai: Actor Nazriya Nazim approached the city police commissioner’s office on Tuesday to officially file a complaint against the director of the yet-to-be-released Dhanush movie, Nayyandi, in which she features.

The 19-year-old actor had raised an issue by complaining to the Nadigar Sangam against director Sargunam and producer Murugesan for using a body double in a song sequence, which involves skin show. She had alleged that the makers didn’t even inform her after she refused to shoot for the scene, which is against her contractual agreement.

Director Sargunam, in a release, denied the allegation and said that they shot the whole song with Nazriya.

”While editing the song, we felt that the inclusion of an intimate close-up scene would increase the impact of the song and I requested Nazriya, who was in Kerala at that time, to come down and act for this particular scene for which the actor responded by saying that she can’t come all the way from Kerala and asked me to shoot that particular scene by using a body double,” the release said, adding that the actor was creating a needless issue, probably for publicity.

The director’s statement also said he was ready to remove that intimate close-up shot from the trailer if Nazriya feels uncomfortable. “Is she ready to sit with the media and see the film and assert that she hasn’t acted in the Inikka Inikka song?” the release said.

Kanyakumari harbour to turn reality

Chennai: The demand of the fishermen in coastal Kanyakumari district for establishing a harbour at Colachel is decades old. Chief minister J. Jayalalithaa’s allocation of Rs 87.75 crores after approving the revised project estimates has raised hope among the fishing community that the project would fructify soon.

The issue had echoed in the state Assembly on several occasions when Congress legislators raised the issue demanding that the state government initiate steps to pave way for developing a natural harbour in the historic town of Colachel, which is in existence since 1920.

At one stage, an exasperated Congress member J. G. Prince, who could not withstand the delay in commissioning the project, stood up and appealed to Jayalalithaa to take a personal interest and ensure the project materialised.

The Chief minister promptly assured that the project would be taken up and also reminded him that the state government had to fund several major projects despite little help from the Centre on the financial front.

In the absence of good berthing facilities, over 1,500 mechanised boatmen of this tiny town on the west coast have been depending on Kerala ports and port at Rameswaram for berthing. Some of them had even switched operations to neighbouring states and this often led to territorial disputes.

Lalu Prasad to be taken to jail today

Ranchi: A CBI court in Ranchi on Monday found all 45 accused including RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav guilty in the multi-crore fodder scam.
Special CBI judge Pravas Kumar Singh delivered the verdict. 475 page verdict was in seven parts. Quantum of punishment to be announced on October 3.

Lalu Prasad Yadav will be taken to jail today. The verdict in the fodder scam to have a bearing on Bihar politics, as the RJD chief stands disqualified as a Lok Sabha member. As per a Supreme Court order that an MP or legislator would stand disqualified immediately if convicted by a court for crimes with punishment of two years or more.

There was heavy security in the Ranchi court ahead of the verdict. RJD supports were seen going to temples and mosques seeking blessing for the RJD chief. Lalu Yadav's son Tejaswi Pratap had earlier said that the verdict won't affect the party and it will continue to function under his guidance.

Prasad and 44 others have been charged with fraudulent withdrawal to the tune of Rs 37.7 crore on fake fodder bills from Chaibasa treasury in the 1990s in a case lodged by CBI. Chaibasa was then part of undivided Bihar.

Accompanied by son Tejaswi Pratap and a host of party colleagues, 65-year-old Prasad on Sunday reached Ranchi to be present in the court.

Besides the RJD supremo, other accused persons include former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra and JD(U) MP Jagdish Sharma.

The government later promulgated an ordinance to undo the apex court order, prompting opposition BJP to allege that it had been done to protect Congress member in Rajya Sabha Rashid Masood, who was recently convicted in a corruption case and also Prasad in case he is indicted in the fodder scam.

Congress Vice-President Rahul Gandhi has, however, slammed the ordinance as "complete nonsense" which should be "torn up and thrown away," leaving its fate uncertain.

The ordinance is likely to be withdrawn after the cabinet meet on October 2.

MBA grads face falling salaries

Hyderabad: The average salary of a management graduate in the state has dropped to Rs 15,000 per month from Rs 25,000 two years back.
The impact is being felt in the ongoing Icet counselling for students to fill management seats, with many of them shying away from taking admissions in management colleges during counselling. Experts said that the current economic downturn is the reason for poor placements and lower salaries.

Management institutes had boomed in the state between 2004 and 2009 with good placements in corporate, financial, banking and allied sectors. The average salary had increased to Rs 30,000 per month in 2009, which has been gradually coming down since then.

The average salary came down to Rs 25,000 in 2010 and 2011 and then to Rs 20,000 in 2012. And in the on-going campus placement drives, several companies are offering Rs 15,000 per month. The downturn has also forced as many as 170 colleges to drop management courses this year.

While there were 1.11 lakh MBA seats in 1007 colleges last year, the seats came down to 95,535 in 837 colleges this year. In the ongoing Icet counselling, 89,595 seats are on offer in 797 management colleges.

Though students from ranks 1 to 60,000 were called, only 27,611 turned up for counselling till September 12. Officials are worried as only about 30,000 out of 89,000 seats will be filled this year.

“Barring a few reputed colleges, there are no takers for MBA seats in majority of the colleges. This is because of poor placements and lower salaries being offered to students after completion of the course. Many colleges will down shutters by next year if the situation continues,” said Ramesh Nimmatoori, chairman, Consortium of Professional Colleges Managements Association.

Prison rules may nip Jagan Mohan Reddy's fast in the bud

Hyderabad: YSR Congress president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy, who began his indefinite hunger strike on Sunday in Chanchalguda Jail, is likely to face serious action under the Prison Act. The Prison Act and Rules says that a prisoner can be force-fed and if he commits the offence again, he can be prosecuted and punishment can amount to a year’s imprisonment.

Chanchalaguda jail superintendent K. Saidaiah confirmed that Jagan Mohan Reddy refused to take any food since morning and said that he would be dealt with according to prison rules.

The Central Industrial Security Force has been deployed outside the jail to prevent protests by YSRC activists and counter-protests by Telangana protagonists.

A jail official who does not want to be named, said Jagan Mohan Reddy had refused to eat any food throughout the day. “He gave us several reasons orally for not taking food. But he refused to give a written application on what ground he is going on strike. He will be dealt with according to Sections 302 and 593 of the AP Prison Rules 1979 and Sections 52 and 46 of the AP Prison Act 1894.”

A jail doctor checked the health condition of Jagan Mohan Reddy.

In earlier cases, when arrested Maoists went on mass hunger strikes, the prosecution sections were not invoked and only ordinary punishments like penal diet and cutting down facilities were imposed.

A jail official said, “As per Section 593, it is the duty of the prison authorities to do what they reasonably can to keep up the health of the prisoner.”

Jagan could be fed by force

Speaking on the option of YSR Congress president Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy being force-fed after he began his indefinite hunger strike at the Chanchalguda jail, a jail official said, “In hunger strike, a prisoner is likely to cause his own death, and the medical officer at his discretion can direct that the prisoner be forcibly fed if it is the only option to keep him alive. Forcible feeding shall not be with violence.”

On Monday, jail officials will warn Jagan that as per Section 302 (treatment of hunger strikes) no redress of any alleged grievance will be allowed as long as the strike continues and he is liable to any prison punishment under Section 52 of the Prison Act. The Section also says that after sufficient warning, the prisoner can be prosecuted under this Act.

The proceedings have to be held within the prison with no delay.

'Star Wars Episode 7' to release in 2015 December

The upcoming ‘Star Wars’ instalment, to be directed by JJ Abrams, is reportedly up for a December 2015 release, instead of May.
With all previous six instalments having been filmed in Britain and released in May, many people believe that the upcoming 'Star Wars' chapter will continue the tradition.

However, according to a report, this upcoming film might be the first to break the history despite the fact that the production will still take place Britain.

The highly-anticipated film will see the return of some original cast members, including Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill and Harrison Ford. David Prowse, who played Darth Vader in the original trilogy, admits he wants to take part in it.

"Unfortunately Darth Vader was killed off. But it would be nice to come back and do another character, because no one's ever seen my face. I was never unmasked," Prowse said.

Determined England wins Ashes series

Chester-Le-Street, United Kingdom: With shadows lengthening across the Riverside ground and time rapidly running out, Alastair Cook tossed the ball one final time to the man who had put his England team on the brink of winning a third straight Ashes series.
Stuart Broad didn't let his captain down.

Steaming in from the Lumley End backed by roars of the crowd, Broad sent down another fierce delivery that Australia tail-ender Peter Siddle lofted harmlessly to mid-off, where James Anderson took a simple catch.

England had won the fourth test — and confirmed its dominance over its greatest cricketing rival in the process.

"We'll enjoy what is a very special day," Cook said, "and one that I'm going to look back on with huge fondness."

A day of 15 wickets and high tension at Chester-le-Street will forever be remembered for Broad's devastating bowling performance.

Set a victory target of 299 on day four, Australia collapsed from 168-2 to 224 all out in just shy of two hours in a final session Monday that saw nine wickets fall in total.

Broad took six of them, finishing with 6-50 and career-best overall figures of 11-121. And, of course, the man-of-the-match award.

England won by 74 runs to take a 3-0 lead in the five-match series. The final test is at The Oval starting Aug. 21, where Australia is looking simply to save face.

"We got outplayed, Stuart Broad bowled a couple of outstanding spells and as soon as we lost Chris Rogers (for 49, to make it 109-1), we found it difficult," Australia captain Michael Clarke said.

"We've got to play better than that," he added. "We need some time to let this sink in."

Retaining the urn, which they did after the drawn third test at Old Trafford last week, was one thing. But winning a third Ashes series in succession for the first time since the so-called "Botham's Ashes" of 1981 really is something to savor for a team that lost eight on the bounce between 1989 and 2003.

Despite their improvement over the past two weeks, the Australians' winless streak in tests moved to eight — a sorry record for such a proud cricket nation.

England, whose unbeaten run in tests stretches to 11, lost the final five wickets of its second innings for the addition of 96 runs to the overnight 234-5. That meant it stayed in the driving seat in a fluctuating test.

Ryan Harris took four wickets to claim a career-best 7-117 — becoming the first Australian since Shane Warne in 2001 to take so many victims in one Ashes innings — but agricultural knocks of 45 from Tim Bresnan and 30 not out from Graeme Swann proved crucial in taking the game away from the tourists.

Even so, things looked rosy for the Australians when Rogers and David Warner put on an opening stand of 109 — the team's best first-wicket partnership of the series.

Rogers edged Swann to Trott at first slip but Warner stayed in the groove, uppercutting Broad for four and smashing Swann over extra cover for the only six of the match.

Even when Usman Khawaja (21) was trapped lbw to Swann to make it 147-2, Clarke came in, hit three quick fours and ensured the momentum was still with the tourists.

Then it all went wrong.

Warner edged a beauty from Bresnan to wicketkeeper Matt Prior to go for 71, and Broad bowled Clarke (21) with a pearler off the seam.

The crowd came to life. England's fielders suddenly chirped up.

"Cooky threw me the ball and said, 'Spice it up a bit,'" Broad said. "I got a good partnership going with Tim Bresnan, we tried to hit the deck as hard as we could and we managed to do it."

Steve Smith (2) dragged a 90 mph delivery from Broad onto his own stumps as he attempted a pull and the paceman then trapped Brad Haddin lbw for 4. He wheeled away in celebration, puffing his cheeks and with his eyes bulging.

In 55 minutes, the whole middle order had been removed. So had Australia's hopes of squaring the series.

"He really charged in," Cook said of Broad. "When everything clicks and he's bowling in the high 80s with the control Broady has, it's incredibly hard to bat.

"Words can't justify how good a spell of bowling that was."

Then it was just a case of wrapping up the tail.

Harris (11) was plumb lbw to Broad, who then bowled Nathan Lyon for 8 to bring up his second five-fer of the match.

With darkness descending and spectators straining their eyes, England was allowed an extra half-hour to take the last wicket — and they needed 16 minutes of the allotted time.

In that crazy final session, Australia lost nine wickets for 104 runs, with Broad hitting one of those purple patches he is known for.

"The guys are very proud in that dressing room," Broad said. "There's a group in there who have won three (series) from three, and there is a real hunger in there that you want to achieve more."

That's something the bruised and battered Australians won't want to hear. They will have their chance for revenge in the return series Down Under starting in November.

'Chennai Express' breaking records, racing towards 100-cr mark

'Chennai Express' has taken off on the fast track on the very first day, it seems. The film made Rs 6.75 crores by way of paid reviews and Rs 33 crores through regular screening on Friday itself. It broke the '3 Idiots' paid preview record (of Rs 2.75 crores) and 'Ek Tha Tiger''s first day collection record (close to Rs 33 crores).

The film continued to make Rs 28 crores on Saturday followed by Rs 30 crores on Sunday. As a result, the film has already made close to Rs 98 crores, even before it has entered weekdays.

The only film to have made Rs 100 crores within five days of its release was Salman Khan’s 'Ek Tha Tiger'.

But if the numbers are anything to go by, 'Chennai Express' might just overtake that. Given the smooth run that the film has had so far, trade analysts believe that the film will make Rs 150 crores at a minimum, but the real challenge for the film now is to cross the Rs 200 crore mark. Given the fact that it will face competition from 'Once Upon A Time In Mumbai' next week, the collections are expected to dwindle a bit.

Bomb threat to Thalaivaa theatres

Chennai: With nine prominent theatres of the city receiving bomb threats on Tuesday night warning them against screening the Vijay starrer, Thalaivaa, advanced bookings were stopped by all theatres for the film slated for release on Friday.

The manager of Inox Cinemas approached the Mylapore police station Wednesday morning with a threat letter from an organisation which called itself the Oppressed Students’ Revolutionary Union.

The letter alleged that Vaendhar Movies, one of the producers of the film, had cheated students of Tamil Nadu and other states of money and was pumping it into the movie business. It warned against screening the film Thalaivaa as it too had been made with such money.

Representatives of Satyam Cinemas and Devi Cineplex also approached the police with similar letters later in the afternoon, according to sources.

When contacted, the Mylapore police confirmed that cinema houses in the city had received threats and the matter was under investigation. But pointing out that there was no such group as the Oppressed Students Revolutionary Union , some police officers felt the letters could be a hoax.

Indian kid has 7-inch tail

A 12-year-old boy in Chandigarh has a 7-inch long tail sticking out of his back, media reports revealed.
Arshid Ali Khan is now worshipped as the living incarnation of Lord Hanuman, and has faithful followers who refer to him as “Balaji,” Nairaland. com reported.

Doctors say the appendage is actually meningocele, a rare form of spina bifida that causes the spine to grow abnormally. Although medical experts believe that Khan should have the “tail” removed because he risks medical problems, he is opposed to it. “I love my tail. It’s a gift from God. I feel special,” he said.

Dr. Scott Meyer, a member of the neuro-spine team at Morri-stown Medical Center in New Jersey, said that the meningocele can be associated with a tuft of hair in the lower back.

Hockey girls bag World Cup bronze

New Delhi: Forward Rani Rampal was the star performer as India clinched their first ever medal in the Junior Women’s Hockey World Cup. India defeated a gritty England 3-2 (1-1) via sudden death in the third place playoff in Monchengladbach , Germany, on Sunday evening.
Rampal, who had earlier scored in regulation time, struck twice in the penalty shootout as India notched up their best-ever finish in the quadrennial event, bettering the ninth place finish in the 2009 edition.

In the final, Holland defeated Argentina 4-2 (11) on penalties.

Rampal converted the first chance for India in the shootout, while Navjot Kaur, Vandana Katariya, Navneet Kaur and Poonam Rani missed out.

Goalkeeper Bigan Soy stood like a rock as England too faltered on four of their five chances, forcing the game into sudden death.

This time, Rampal and Navneet converted successfully to hand India the bronze. Earlier, the teams were locked 1-1 in regulation time. Said coach Neil Hawgood, “It means a lot to our kids’ psychology that they can actually win a medal.

They have never been in those games before.

“We practised shootouts, so I thought we would score more than three out of seven. Our goalkeeper Bigan Soy, who never played a minute the whole tournament, did a great job,” he added.

Telangana govt to rule Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The administration of Hyderabad will remain with the Telangana government unless the Centre declares the city as a Union Territory for the 10 years it serves as the joint capital.
Existing rules do not permit any other arrangement which would allow a third party administration for the common capital. Highly placed sources in the Central government told this newspaper that irrespective of the UT status, protection of migrants and their assets would be given legislative backing along with their very status in the new state.

Uncertainty over limits of UT status

A senior bureaucrat involved in the process of creating Telangana state at the Centre said, “The AP Reorganisation Bill 2013 will clearly specify the number of years of stay and pursue of studies for a particular period to determine the local status of migrants in the Telangana state.”

There had been a general feeling among migrants, employees and businessmen from Andhra and Rayalaseema regions that the Centre would control the city’s administration when AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh had announced that Hyderabad would be the common capital for 10 years.

Sources, however, said that the Congress Central leadership was aware of these limitations and played it safe by buying time on the contentious issue. “They (Congress leaders) do not want the upbeat mood in Telangana to be spoiled with the declaration of a UT status,” the sources added.

As an option, the Centre is considering according UT status to the city with a specific mention of a time frame of 10 years on condition that it will be part of the Telangana state thereafter. The second option is to leave it to the Telangana government to administer.

“In such a case it is equal to living in a rented house,” said a senior state bureaucrat. Sources also said there was no clarity on whether to restrict the UT status, if accorded, to the GHMC limits or extend it to the HMDA.

Katrina Kaif fine with leak of bikini photos with Ranbir Kapoor

Katrina Kaif is apparently fine that her holiday pictures with Ranbir Kapoor have surfaced.
According to an online publication, the Hollywood actress was heard telling a pal that the pictures have hit two birds with one stone.

The first reason being that Salman Khan is no longer in her life and she is now in love with Kapoor.

The second reason is that the rumours of the Kapoor getting close with his former girlfriend Deepika Padukone, during the success party of their flick 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani' are nothing but false.

Though the 30-year-old brunette beauty is unhappy about with the way the pictures were clicked, as the couple was not aware that they were being photographed.

77 dead in Spanish train crash

Santiago De Compostela (Spain): A train hurtled off the tracks in northwest Spain killing at least 77 passengers and injuring more than 140, an official said on Thursday, with the media suggesting the tragedy could be due to speeding.

Four carriages overturned in the smash late Wednesday, smoke billowing from the wreckage, as bodies were lain out under blankets along the tracks. The wagons piled into each other and folded up like an accordion. One was ripped apart by the force of the crash, one of its ends pushed up into the air. Several witnesses spoke of a loud explosion.

"I was at home and I heard something like a clap of thunder, It was very loud and there was lots of smoke," said 62-year-old Maria Teresa Ramos, who lived just metres from where the accident happened. "It's a disaster, people are crying out. Nobody has ever seen anything like this," she added.

The accident happened at 8:42 pm (1842 GMT) Wednesday as the train carrying 218 passengers and four staff was about to enter Santiago de Compostela station in the northwestern region of Galicia. Rescue workers recovered 73 bodies from the train's wreckage and four more victims died later in hospital, said a spokesman for the Galicia high court, increasing an earlier toll figure.

A total of 143 people were said to have various injuries. Francisco Otero, 39, who was inside his parents' home just beside the section of the track where the accident happened, said he "heard a huge bang. As if there had been an earthquake."

"The first thing I saw was the body of a woman. I had never seen a corpse before. But above all what caught my attention was that there was a lot of silence, some smoke and a small fire," he said.

"My neighbours tried to pull out people who were trapped inside the carriages with the help of pickaxes and sledgehammers and they eventually got them out with a hand saw. It was unreal."

The train had left Madrid and was heading for the town of Ferrol as the Galicia region was preparing celebrations in honour of its patron saint James. A witness told radio Cadena Ser that carriages overturned several times on a bend and came to a halt piled up on each other.

Public television TVE said the train may have derailed because it was speeding at the time of the accident but a spokesman for state railway company Renfe said it was too soon to say what caused the accident.

"There is an investigation underway and we have to wait. We will know what the speed is very soon when we consult the train's black box," a Renfe spokesman said.

"Deadly High Speed" the El Mundo daily's headline ran. The paper reported that the train had been travelling at 220 kilometres (136 miles) per hour in an urban zone with a speed limit of 80 kph.

The El Pais suggested the train was travelling at 180 kilometres per hour when the accident happened.

The accident happened on a stretch of high-speed track about four kilometres (2.5 miles) from the main train station in Santiago de Compostela, the destination of the famous El Camino de Santiago pilgrimage which has been followed by Christians since the Middle Ages.

The train was the Alvia model which is able to adapt between high-speed and normal tracks.

Emergency services workers in red jackets tended to injured passengers lying on a patch of grass as ambulance sirens wailed in the background. "There are bodies laying on the railway track. It's a Dante-esque scene," Alberto Nunez Feijoo, president of the regional government, told news radio Cadena Ser.

A municipal building was made available for psychological counselling and as a centre for providing information. Carriages were lying across the tracks, some of them jammed alongside a concrete siding.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy, who is from Santiago de Compostela, was to visit the scene of the accident on Thursday. "I want to express my affection and solidarity with the victims of the terrible train accident in Santiago," he said in a Twitter message.

Pope Francis called for prayers for the victims. "He joins the families in their sorrow and calls for prayers ... in this tragic event," Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi told reporters during the pope's visit to Rio de Janeiro.

The town hall of Santiago de Compostela called off planned concerts and firework displays that had been planned as part of the festivities in honour of its patron saint.

The disaster was one of the worst in the history of Spain's rail network. In 1944, hundreds were killed in a crash also between Madrid and Galicia. In 1972, 77 people were killed in a derailment in Andalusia in the south.
