Amitabh Bachchan Races Through Poster of First Fiction Show Yudh

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan launched the dramatic poster of his first fiction TV series titled Yudh, which is expected to go on air from July, here on Wednesday.

Big B, who will be seen playing the role of construction company co-owner Yudhishthir Sikarwar in the TV series, unveiled the poster in the presence of his co-stars Sarika and Aahana Kumra, the show's creative director Anurag Kashyap, and creative consultant Shoojit Sircar, among others.

The poster of the series, directed by Ribhu Dasgupta, presents an intense-looking Amitabh Bachchan running away in a blue suit against the backdrop of skyrising buildings amidst dust.

"I play a construction company owner. There is business rivalry and family issues along with health issues which might be terminal how he balances is what you will get to see," Mr Bachchan told reporters here at the poster launch.

Co-produced by Big B's production company Saraswati Creations with Endemol India, the show is being promoted as a "first of its own kind" TV series.

"TV needs change and we always complain about it. I feel it (Yudh) is cinema as a TV series," said Shoojit Sircar.

Anurag Kashyap agreed, "It's like cinema on screen. This is Mr Bachchan at his best. We followed rules of cinema for the show. The approach from script to sound design to editing, it's same as it's done in films."

The Next Nook Will Be a Samsung Galaxy Tab

Barnes & Noble finally found a home for its collapsing hardware business: Samsung.
The Korean hardware giant will build Nook software into Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 tablets and sell them in Barnes & Noble retailers as Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nooks.

The announcement comes roughly four months after Barnes & Noble CEO Mike Huseby promised new hardware by late this year. Now, in a partnership with Samsung, he seems to have delivered on his promise, while mostly exiting the hardware business.

The 7-inch Tab 4 will be a co-branded Android device, but will offer the Barnes & Noble's Nook reading experience.

The 7-inch Tab 4 will be a co-branded Android device, but will offer the Barnes & Noble's Nook reading experience. The Nook HD tablets were notable for a consumer-friendly interface that allowed users to configure profiles for each family member.

“Standing behind these great new devices will be the power of our 40,000 Barnes & Noble booksellers combined with our deep bookselling and retail expertise to provide sales support and personalized in-store customer service for our lineup of new Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook products," Huseby said.

The current Galaxy Tab 4 costs $199.99, runs Android 4.4 (KitKat), features two cameras (1.3 megapixel on the front and 3 megapixel on the back) and boasts a 1280 x 800 screen, which is actually a lower screen resolution than Barnes & Noble's last 7-inch Nook HD (1440 x 900). No word yet on whether or not the Tab 4 Nook's will also offer access to Google Play.

Barnes & Noble will continue to sell its own GlowLight e-readers alongside the Tab 4 Nooks starting this August, and confirmed to Mashable that it will build new e-readers as well. Late last year, Barnes & Noble delivered an ultralight, 6.2-oz. e-reader with e-ink, but did little to market it during the holiday buying season.

India surrenders No 1 ODI rank

Hamilton: India were today dethroned as the number one ODI team after they suffered an agonising 15-run defeat in a rain-truncated second cricket one-dayer against New Zealand, who have now taken a 2-0 lead in the five-match series here.

India, who desperately needed a win to retain their top spot, made a valiant effort to overhaul the revised target of 297 in 42 overs but failed to cross the finishing line scoring 277 for nine in 41.3 overs, giving Australia pole position in the ICC ODI rankings. The Duckworth-Lewis par score in 41.3 overs was 293.

Put into bat, the Kiwis rattled up 271 for seven riding on Kane Williamson's 76 and all-rounder Corey Anderson's rampaging 17-ball-44 that included five huge sixes as the hosts amassed a whopping 101 runs in 8.4 overs after rain interruption.

India were left with a daunting task of chasing a revised target of 297 as per the D/L method and were again done in by a shaky start and lack of big partnerships which has been their bane of late.

Virat Kohli, who hit a century in the first ODI, again top-scored with a sparkling 78 while skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (56), Suresh Raina (35), Ajinkya Rahane (36) got the starts but could not translate them into match-winning knocks.

Tim Southee (4/72) was pick of the New Zealand bowlers while Anderson again displayed his all-round prowess picking up three for 67 with wickets of Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Shikhar Dhawan (12, 22 balls) and Rohit Sharma (20, 34 balls) wasted a lot of deliveries upfront as India couldn't take advantage of the bowling Powerplay.

Sunanda died of poisoning, SDM asks police to probe murder, suicide angles

New Delhi: The Sub-Divisional Magistrate, probing the death of Sunanda Pushkar, on Tuesday directed the police to investigate the case thoroughly including the murder and suicide angles after he categorically pin-pointed 'poisoning' as the reason behind the sensational demise. Significantly, Alok Sharma, the SDM in his report, said no family member of Sunanda doubted any foul play in her death, the sources said.

Doctors at AIIMS who conducted autopsy on Sunanda had said her death was 'sudden and unnatural' and it was caused by 'drug overdose' which in other words could be called drug poisoning. 52-year-old Sunanda was found dead in a 5-star hotel in South Delhi on Friday night, a day after her twitter spat with Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar over an alleged affair with Tharoor.

AIIMS sources said the autopsy report submitted to the SDM mentioned about over a dozen injury marks on both hands of Sunanda and a minor bruise on her left cheek which could be due to use of 'blunt force'. The report, however, ruled out death due to the injuries.

The autopsy report also said no food samples were found in Sunanda's stomach which according to doctors suggested that "she had not been eating".

Police sources said two strips of anti-depressant drug alprazolam, commonly known as alprax, were found in the hotel suite where she was found dead.

The song titled, Aint nobody ****in with my music, released on the video-sharing website on January 16 and extensively publicised by him in social media websites, contains obscene and immoral lyrics and degrades women in particular, stated S. Jebadas Pandian in his complaint. In his complaint, the advocate sought police action against Anirudh, citing that the song amounts to a crime under the Indian Penal Code and the Information Technology Act.

Anirudh, who achieved celebrity status and fame at a young age, had chosen to abuse the same and corrupt youth by exposing them to perverse lyrics and provoking them, the complaint read.

All releases, including teasers and trailers are subject to censor certification, the advocate said. The video has now been taken down from websites by the uploaders.

Facebook acquires India's Little Eye Labs

New Delhi: Social networking giant Facebook today acquired Bangalore-based Little Eye Labs, its first take over in the country, for an undisclosed amount. The start up firm builds performance analysis and monitoring tools for mobile app developers.

"Today, we are very excited to announce that Facebook is acquiring our company. With this acquisition, Little Eye Labs will join forces with Facebook to take its mobile development to the next level," Little Eye Labs said on its website.

This is Facebook's first acquisition of an Indian company and Little Eye is happy to become part of such an incredible team, it added.

Though the deal size has not been announced, reports suggest it could be in the range of USD 10-15 million.

"I'm excited to announce that we're acquiring Little Eye Labs, a company that produces world-class technology to help developers build more efficient products with Android.

This is an opportunity to welcome some of the industry's most talented engineers to our team in Menlo Park, California," Facebook Engineering Manager Subbu Subramanian said.

At Facebook, the focus continues to be on producing useful and engaging mobile apps, he added. "Little Eye Labs technology will help us continue to improve Facebook's Android codebase to make more efficient, higher-performing apps," he said.

Founded about a year ago by four Bangalore-based technology professionals -- Giridhar Murthy, Kumar Rangarajan, Satyam Kandula and Lakshman Kakkirala, Little Eye is backed by GSF and VenturEast Tenet Fund.

"The entire Little Eye Labs team will move to Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, California. From there, we'll be able to leverage Facebook's infrastructure and help improve performance of their apps," the note said.

It added that current customers of the firm will receive further information on its plans to offer a free version of Little Eye until June 30, 2014.

Some other acquisitions that Facebook has made to strengthen its mobile products include Parse, a mobile- backend-as-a-service startup (April 2013).

Facebook also recently made an attempt to buy instant messaging firm Snapchat, which reportedly turned down its USD 3 billion offer.

$866,902 for TN scientist to study brain

Chennai: Twenty years ago he worked on creating a telephone for hearing impaired children in Chennai while still a student at the Anna University. Now a full fledged professor , Khaleel A. Razak remains as innovative as ever and has even been awarded a five-year, $ 866,902 faculty early career development programme (CAREER) grant by the US National Science Foundation to carry on with his research into how the brain processes everyday sounds.

His aim? To find therapies for age-related hearing problems and the Fragile X Syndrome. “Age-related hearing loss is the most preventable hearing-related problem in the world,” explains the neuroscientist, who is an assistant professor of psychology and neuroscience at the University of California, Riverside.

His research that involves study of mouse models of aging and the Fragile X Syndrome, an autism spectrum disorder, is aided by an in depth examination of the pallid bat.

“The pallid bat is a bit unusual among bats in that it uses echolocation for general orientation and obstacle avoidance, but listens for prey on the ground, like crickets, scorpions and millipedes,” Prof. Razak explains.
“We hope to identify neuron types that seem to be lost or changed during ageing. There may be combinations of behavioural or pharmacological therapies that could delay or prevent these changes.” The grant will support research on how the brain’s auditory cortex processes information about sound locations.

“Precise sound localisation can be a matter of life and death,” he explained. “The auditory cortex is necessary for sound localisation, but our understanding of the relevant neural processing is rudimentary.

Nine killed as train catches fire

Mumbai: Nine persons were charred to death in their sleep when a fire broke out in three coaches of the Bandra-Dehradun Express in neighbouring Thane district in the wee hours today, the second fire mishap on a train within a fortnight.

The fire erupted in one of the three coaches and soon spread to other two coaches when the passengers were sleeping at about 2.50 AM. Among the nine dead, one is a woman and four are men while the rest were yet to be identified, said Western Railway PRO Sharat Chandra. Four persons have sustained minor injuries, said police.

The affected coaches were S-2 S-3 and S-4. The maximum numbers of passengers were in S-4 (64) followed by 54 in S-2 and three in S-3. Railway Minister Mallikarjun Kharge has expressed grief over the death of passengers and announced an ex-gratia of Rs five lakh each to the next of kin of those killed. Rs one lakh will be given to those seriously injured and a sum of Rs 50,000 will be given to those who received minor injuries, Chairman, Railway Board, Arunendra Kumar said. The commissioner of Railway Safety will conduct an inquiry into the fire incident, he said.

"The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained. However, the fire has been put out and the train has made its forward journey," Kumar said. Railway sources said short circuit cannot be ruled out as burnt cables were found lying under the electric board of S-3 coach. Chandra said that a gateman at a level crossing spotted the fire and immediately alerted the guard inside the train. The guard subsequently informed the motorman following which the train was stopped.

"Due to alertness of the gateman, a major disaster was averted," Chandra said. The train was halted at Gholvad Railway Station near Dahanu road where the fire was brought under control. Northern Railways have announced helpine numbers -23342954 and 24355954 -to those seeking information on the train and passengers.

Delhi reels under worst fog since '10

New Delhi: Cold wave continued in the national capital, which experienced the worst fog since 2010 on Sunday night with maximum temperature settling at 19 degrees Celsius. The prevailing cold wave affected flight schedules and the Indira Gandhi airport was shut down till 5 am.

A thick fog enveloped the city on Moday morning too, a day after 40 trains coming towards Delhi were rescheduled. Not just Delhi, even neighbouring places saw a drop in temperature.

Kashmir and Srinagar experienced minus 4 degrees Celsius temperature while mercury dropped in Punjab, Haryana and chandigarh too.

The fog led to delay and diversion of around 150 domestic and international flights today. Between 8 PM last night and 8 AM this morning, around 150 flights, either arriving here or departing from here have been cancelled or diverted due to extremely poor visibility at the airport due to dense fog, airport officials said.

Around 51 domestic and international flights departing from here and 39 scheduled to arrive here, between 8 PM last night and 8 this morning, have been cancelled. Also 52 incoming flights have been diverted to Amritsar, Lucknow and other destinations, they said.

A SpiceJet flight from Goa to Delhi, with 132 passengers and four crew onboard, had to make an emergency landing at around 9.50 PM as it ran short on fuel. Lounges at the airport were packed with passengers who complained that they were not given information about the flight status.

Long queues were seen at airline counters for collection of refunds for cancelled flights or to get a seat on any early flight. Around 15 flights coming to Delhi were diverted to Amritsar. People could be seen moving from one counter to another in search of information or tickets.

"I had to wait for about three hours before the airline decided to cancel my flight to Mumbai. Now I am waiting in the queue to get a refund," said Anil Kumar. One of the passengers Anna, who was to arrive in Delhi from Hyderabad by an Air India flight which was subsequently diverted to Amritsar, said they have no clue when their flight will leave for Delhi.

"I have been waiting through the night at Amritsar airport. No idea when our flight will leave for Delhi. Authorities have told us that it might take off after noon," she said over phone from Amritsar.

Within two hours, the runway visibility dropped from 500 metres to less than 100 metres. Operations almost came to a complete halt around 10 PM after runway visibility dipped to less than 75 metres, which is the minimum required visibility condition for an aircraft to land using CAT IIIB instrument landing system. The general visibility was almost nil. The minimum required visibility for an aircraft for the Low Visibility Take Off (LVTO) is 125 metres and 150 metres, depending upon the size of the aircraft.

Delhi airport is equipped with two CAT-III B complaint runways, which enables a CAT-III B trained pilot to land a CAT-III B complaint plane when the runway visibility is merely 75 metres.

On Sunday, the visibility remained poor during the whole day which led to delay in schedule of around 206 domestic and international flights. Flight operations resumed today around 1 AM, when the landings started. Priority was given to international flights, as most of them operate at night, they said.

Though the visibility was poor, planes were landing using CAT III B ILS and the take off started around 4 AM, when runway visibility improved to more than 150 metres on the main runway (28/10), officials said.

But gradually visibility on the third runway, (29/11) also started to improve and both the runway were used intermittently, they added. Delhi had been witnessing dense fog from Saturday last, which, according to the Met Department, is the "season's worst". Met officials said it may be the worst fog after January 2010.

According to Met department, maximum temperature on Monday will be 16 deg celsius. Monday will start with shallow fog but the sky will be clear later in the day.

Even in the US many places like North Dakota and are experiencing minus 35 Celsius temperatures.

In New York City, a plane from Toronto landed at Kennedy International Airport and then slid into snow on a taxiway. No one was hurt, though the airport temporarily suspended operations because of icy runways.

India launches GSLV-D5 successfully

Bangalore: In a major achievement, India’s geo-synchronous satellite launch vehicle (GSLV-D5) blasted off successfully from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota on Sunday.

The GSLV-D5 with indigenous cryogenic engine successfully placed GSAT-14 communication satellite on orbit.

Speaking after the launch, ISRO Chairman K. Radhakrishnan said, "I am extremely happy and proud to say that ISRO has done it."

Wasting no time, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh congratulated the ISRO team.

PM congratulates the scientists and engineers of ISRO for the successful launch of GSLV D5 carrying GSAT-14 payload, PMO tweeted soon after the successful launch.

"It is yet another important step that the country has taken in the area of science and technology," Manmohan said, according to the post on Twitter.

When the Mars orbiter was successfully launched into Earth orbit on November 5 last year, BJP's PM candidate and Gujarat CM Narendra Modi was the first one to congratulate the ISRO team.

With this, India joins an elite club of countries with the technology after a crash and a fuel leak on previous attempts.

Earlier, scientists were making final preparations for the launch of the rocket using a complex technology mastered by just a handful of countries, a top Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) official said.

The rocket weighs 415-tonne and carries a two-tonne advanced communications satellite, ISRO director Deviprasad Karnik said.

"Preparations for final countdown are going on normally to launch the 49-metre Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-D5) with our cryogenic engine at 4:18pm," Karnik told AFP earlier.

The mission is India's latest attempt to push further into the global market for launching commercial satellites. It comes after India successfully lifted a spacecraft into orbit in November aimed at travelling to Mars, as the country bids to become the first Asian nation to reach the Red Planet.

Sunday's project has had to overcome several hurdles, including an aborted launch in August last year several hours before lift-off after a fuel leak was discovered in one of the rocket's engines.

The first rocket crashed into the Bay of Bengal just minutes after take-off in April 2010 after the cryogenic engines failed to ignite.

"If we succeed this time, India will join a select club of space-faring nations with indigenous cryogenic engine capability to launch above two-tonne class satellites," Karnik had said earlier.

The United States, Russia, France, Japan and China are among the countries to have successfully developed cryogenic boosters. "The twin purpose of this launch mission is to flight test once again our own cryogenic engine and put into the geostationary orbit a heavy communication satellite," Karnik said.

It has taken ISRO scientists years to develop cryogenic motors after its bid to import the technology from Russia in 1992 failed because of opposition from the United States. The powerful booster technology, using super-cooled liquid fuel, is designed to put heavier satellites into high orbits, about 36,000 kilometres (22,000 miles) from Earth.

"A cryogenic rocket stage is more efficient and provides more thrust for every kilogram (kg) of propellant (fuel) it burns compared to other solid and liquid fuel stages," Karnik said.

Since 2001, India has bought cryogenic engines from Russia and seven of them have been used on missions.

India first staked its claim for a share of the lucrative commercial satellite-launch market by sending an Italian satellite into orbit in 2007.

The government sees its low-cost space exploration programme as an achievement that underlines India's emergence as a major world economy, and many citizens take great patriotic pride in its development.

Kashmir freezes at sub-zero temp

Srinagar: Cold wave tightened its grip further in Kashmir Valley and Ladakh region as minimum temperatures in most places dipped several degrees below the freezing point.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, recorded a minimum temperature of minus 4.2 degrees Celsius, over two degrees down from the previous night's minus 1.6 degrees Celsius, a MeT department official said here.

The minimum temperature in Pahalgam, in south Kashmir, went over four degrees down from the previous night's minus 7.7 degrees Celsius to settle at minus 12.4 degrees Celsius last night.

The famous ski-resort of Gulmarg registered a low of minus 9.8 degrees Celsius, as against the previous night's minus 11.6 degrees Celsius.

The official said the minimum temperature in Qazigund- the gateway town to Kashmir valley - decreased by over four degrees to settle at minus 8.0 degrees Celsius, compared to minus 3.8 degrees Celsius the previous night.

Kokernag, in south, recorded a low of minus 10.6 degrees Celsius, down by over four degrees from minus 6.3 degrees Celsius the previous night, he said. The minimum in Kupwara, in north Kashmir, settled at minus 2.8 degrees Celsius compared to the previous night's minus 0.8 degree Celsius. Leh, in Ladakh region, recorded a low of minus 8.6 degrees Celsius against the previous night's minus 14.7 degrees Celsius.

The mercury in Kargil settled at a low of minus 16.1 degrees Celsius, over three degrees down from minus 13.0 degrees Celsius the previous night. The MeT department has said the weather would remain mainly dry over the next few days and there would be a further dip in the mercury making the conditions in the valley colder.

Watch Earth spin from comfort of your home

Washington: Two Russian astronauts, who took a record-breaking seven and a half hour spacewalk outside the ISS, were unsuccessful at installing cameras that would allow people to watch the Earth spin from the comfort of their house.

The spacewalk by Oleg Kotov and Sergei Ryazansky was the third in a week at the orbiting laboratory. US astronauts Rick Mastracchio and Michael Hopkins had two spacewalks on Saturday and Tuesday to remove and replace a faulty cooling pump, Fox News reported.

The Russians' task was shelved after a Russian flight control team outside Moscow was not able to receive telemetry data from the video cam.

Vancouver-based UrtheCast launched the cameras with the Russian's aid into orbit on November 25.

Once calibrated, the cameras are going to start beaming images, and an ordinary web surfer would be able to see the Earth in space with a delay of only 45 minutes to a couple hours at the most.

Spain distributes $3.4 bln in x'mas lottery

New York: The country of Spain, which is currently going through a financial crisis, has handed out 3.4 billion dollars in the annual and world's richest Christmas lottery.

" El Gordo " or the "Fat One", the lottery's top prize of 546,200 dollars went to 27-year-old mechanic Raul Clavero and four other members of his family who had also bought tickets with the same winning numbers, the New York Daily News reported.

Unlike other lotteries that offer one large top prize, Spain's lottery offers thousands of dollars to multiple ticketholders.
